Sustain Awards - Award for Biodiversity

Best in class for Biodiversity: Tarmac triumphs at National Sustainability Awards

Tarmac's Northumberland quarries have been awarded a major prize at the prestigious Sustain Awards event, held in London on the 3 March. The company took home the Natural England-sponsored 'Award for Biodiversity', in recognition of the outstanding work that the company has done to create Biodiversity Action Plans at each quarry in the region.

The Sustain awards is a national event that recognises exceptional achievements in the field of sustainability. Tarmac saw off hot competition from major companies from a range of industry sectors to take home the coveted Biodiversity award.

After being given a Biodiversity Benchmark by the Northumberland Wildlife Trust last year for our Northumberland Biodiversity Action Plan, this award really is the icing on the cake. I'm proud that the hard work of the team has been recognised, and I also hope it shows how committed we are as a business to biodiversity and creating a fantastic natural resource."

Tarmac was the first UK organisation to have Biodiversity Action Plans in place at all of its active quarries. The Biodiversity Benchmark it received from The Wildlife Trusts was the first time that this award had been given to such a large number of sites in one area.
