Ready-mixed concrete truck system to drive industry change
Forget sat-nav, there is a new on-board truck system which is set to revolutionise the production and delivery of ready-mixed concrete, improving product quality, data accuracy and consistently meeting the specified concrete slump.
The Verifi system, which is being trialled by Tarmac, closes the process control loop on a ready-mix truck, preventing drivers and contractors adding uncontrolled amounts of water, without a record, to ready-mixed concrete, which can lead to inferior product quality and rejected loads.
The six-month trial across 15 Tarmac trucks in the north-west has successfully demonstrated that the system is capable of delivering concrete slump within just ±10mm of the specified value.
The innovative American-designed system is also the first to provide a detailed record of water added at the concrete plant, during transportation and on site. This complete record from 'plant to site' provides greater transparency and will allow Tarmac to further improve the quality and consistency of ready-mixed concrete.
Alasdair Stables, head of technical at Tarmac said: "Until now, the ready-mixed concrete industry has been relatively unchanged in its approach to transportation and delivery. This system has demonstrated that it can consistently deliver even greater accuracy, product quality and reliability for our customers.
"When the truck is calibrated and has a correct materials curve, our trials have demonstrated that the system will deliver concrete slump within millimetres of a specific target."
